The case of the fastigiated vipers bugloss

What? Well Viper's bugloss will be familiar as I am always saying how spectacular the fields around here become in late Spring with carpets of scintilating purple/blue/pink Viper's Bugloss but fastigiated? We had a botanist staying and apparently fastigiation is the term for when a plant mutates by growing several normal stems into one thick stem thus producing this very weird looking plant.
